When you told me you were leavin’, I didn’t believe it was true But when I heard the front door slam that’s the last I saw of you And I ain’t seen my baby all week It’s a grown up game of hide and seek If I close my eyes and count to ten Will you come home again? Well I called up your mama, said “Mom, come to the phone, Your daughter’s actin’ crazy, and she won’t come back home” And I haven’t seen my baby all week It’s a grown up game of hide and seek If I close my eyes and count to ten Will you come home again? Gonna call up Dick Tracy, hire Charlie Chan If those guys can’t find you I don’t think anyone can And I haven’t seen my baby all week It’s a grown up game of hide and seek If I close my eyes and count to ten Will you come home again?

Baby don't you start crying', don't start cryin' now Baby don't you start crying', don't start cryin' now It's too late for tears, and I'm a-gonna tell you why I'm gonna tell you why I'm gonna tell you why It's too late for tears, and I'm a-gonna tell you why The man you got, he don't mean you no good The man you got, he don't mean you no good He's just wrecking your name in your neighborhood I'm gonna tell you why I'm gonna tell you why It's too late for tears, and I'm a-gonna tell you why He's got you at home, and another woman down the street He's got you at home, and another woman down the street He's looking' to tangle, with every woman he meets I'm gonna tell you why I'm gonna tell you why It's too late for tears, and I'm a-gonna tell you why

Don’t trust your neighbors cause they don’t mean you no good Don’t trust your neighbors cause they don’t mean you no good Though they actin’ nice and kind, they’re out to wreck the neighborhood Now here comes Carl always askin’ where you go While you’re downtown shopping he’ll steal your brand new stereo Don’t trust your neighbors - cause they don’t mean you no good They only actin’ nice and kind, they’re tryin’ to ruin the neighborhood Check out Duke, he’s been your best friend all your life While you’re not at home he’s borrowin’ sugar from your wife Don’t trust your neighbors - cause they don’t mean you no good They only actin’ nice and kind, they’re tryin’ to ruin the neighborhood Well, I went down to the B&B, just to have me a little, little taste When I spied some of my neighbors, on the other side of the place Well, I smiled and waved, but they didn’t notice me They was deep in conversation, that I could plainly see So I picked up my drink, and I moved to a closer stool ‘Cause you just can’t get your toes wet, til you dip ‘em in the pool Well Liz was talkin’ about Judy, and Phil told a story about Ed I just couldn’t believe all the crazy things they said And even if none of it was true, even if it was all lies The stories were way too good, just to let ‘em die So I’m gonna do my part, just to spread ‘em all over this town “Cause a hot rumor’s just like a good man, you just can’t keep him down The widow Barnes always got her shades pulled down real tight But she’ll be peepin’ in your bedroom window late at night Don’t trust your neighbors - cause they don’t mean you no good They only actin’ nice and kind, they’re tryin’ to ruin the neighborhood

about

Back To Square One marked a return to both live performance and to my musical roots in the blues. Originally released as a limited edition CD in 2007 as NQP Retroactive 2104, it was dedicated to the memory of my friends Tom Hobart and Danelle Williams.
In an effort to accurately reflect my live performance sound as a solo keyboardist/vocalist, all of these songs were recorded in single take, live recordings in my home studio in Healdsburg, CA.
The main keyboard is a funky old Kawai digital piano synth that I found for $50 at a swap meet in Santa Rosa, CA. It took a real pounding and had a quasi Fender Rhodes/Wurlitzer 200 tone. It is MIDI'd to an EMU Performance acoustic piano synth module, another early digital relic, and backed up by a Yamaha RY20 drum machine.
Featured are the first recordings of three songs I wrote in the 1990's - Gon' Tell You Why, Hide And Seek and Don't Trust Your Neighbors.
Recorded during the sessions for this album in 2006 but not issued at the time, the bonus track, She Belongs To Me includes a track of guitar that I overdubbed on my 1966 Gretsch Tennesseean.
The images accompanying tracks 1 through 8 are the original CD issue art.
The images accompanying tracks 9 and 10 are of a very limited edition sampler CD EP (NQP Retroactive 2099) given away to promote my live performances. It was released during 2006 and features 5 tracks recorded from May to July 2006 that were later included in the full-length Back To Square One CD.

The Inner Seem is the latest in a long history of assigning every project with new collaborators a different name. The Inner Seem is reflects the difference between the way we see ourselves (how we seem) and how we are seen by others. We are now accepting bookings.
