about

Dense, delicate, bombastic, peaceful, irritating, soothing, and everything in between.

These three pieces were improvised and recorded on the evening of November 13, 2019. They are presented here in their original recording order with minimal editing and mixing, with the exception of track 4. Track four is an edit of track 2 that focuses on the last time we played through it for a while instead of including the lead-up improvisations.

We had planned to do some recording that evening but it was only that morning that I suggested we record improvisations using John’s 1970’s Minimoog Model D. It doesn’t get regular usage, and revealed a couple of problems during a brief sound check. One, it would not quite come up to standard tuning overall, and two, the keyboard was not “scaling” properly. Specifically, the individual notes were not one half-tone apart from each other. This was less noticeable at lower pitches, so I knew I could “safely” play some bass lines. For other pitch ranges, I would just have to improvise.

My ‘66 Gretsch was involved because it was undergoing some minor binding repair and a major setup at Bob Groat’s Santa Rosa guitar shop. I traded a 1970’s Les Paul for it back in 1982, and had installed a vintage Melita bridge way back then, but had never had it professionally set up. It just so happened that it was ready to pick up on the day of this session, so I suggested that Johnny try it out.

After some brief level setting, we created these pieces, which are further described at each track listing.
